Like other Credit Unions Holdfast is a not-for-profit, financial co-operative, owned and run by its members, working throughout North and South Essex, in the community, for the community. Our core business is to help people save on a regular basis and thus become eligible for small, low cost, loans but we are also involved in providing financial education for children and adults.

Holdfast began as a savings club in the eighties, in Holy Family and All Saints church, Witham and then, in response to changes in the welfare system which were causing hardship in the community, became Holdfast Credit Union in 1992. The name HOLDFAST came from some of the letters in the name of the church. We have had many homes but our main office has been based in the Centre at Witham United Reformed Church for over 15 years.  

By 2018 we had come to realise that our ageing equipment and IT system were not serving our members as well as they should and after a period of fund raising we were able to acquire new computers, a new software system and a new website. All this has revolutionised the way we work and enabled us to provide the kind of service our members expect in 2020. We still have more to do but are looking forward with confidence to growing and expanding our membership and increasing our services and products.  

Holdfast is authorised and regulated by the same bodies which govern the proceedings of Banks and Building Societies and is covered by the FCA Compensation Scheme. The Board of Directors is responsible for policy making and making sure that Holdfast adheres to the rules and regulations laid down by the various regulators. By law all Directors have to be members of the Credit Union and may not receive any financial remuneration for their services.  

The day to day business of running Holdfast is carried out by a professional Office Manager, supported by a dedicated and committed team of volunteers who bring to their roles their previous career and life experience across a broad spectrum of activities, united in their commitment to serving the community and helping people to manage their finances.
